(National Mental Health Program )
The Government of India has launched the National Mental Health
Programme (NMHP) in 1982, keeping in view the heavy burden of
mental illness in the community, and the absolute inadequacy of
mental health care infrastructure in the country to deal with it ( a
total of about 20764 beds available 0r 1 bed for 15400 populations)
The program envisage a primary health care a community based
approach in the rural area supported by the professional psychiatric
supervision from the district level and referral services by the
mental hospital and mental health units of the general hospital.
Objective:
1)
To ensure availability accessibility of minimum mental health care
for all the in the foreseeable future, particularly to most
vulnerable and underprivileged sections of population.
2)
To encourage application of mental health knowledge in general
health care and in social development.
To
promote community participation in the mental health services
development and to stimulate efforts towards self help in the
community
